With December just around the corner and days getting colder; I am finding myself definitely wanting soup for dinner more. Pho soup is perfect for those chilly days and I may have just found the best pho soup in town!

Soup Shop opened earlier this 2022 in Gardena, California. They have two other locations in Anaheim, California as well as South Gate, California. I’m definitely glad this place is now in the South Bay! Their menu consists of appetizers, fried rice, pho noodle soup, premium rice plates and beverages.

I love starting off a meal here with their tasty appetizers! I love their Crispy Egg Rolls! They are filled with crab, pork, carrot, mushrooms, taro and assorted veggies.

One can’t go here without eating pho! They make an excellent phot soup. Their pho menu is extensive and unique! Each pho has 24 hour slow cooked bone broth and is served with thin rice noodles, white and green onions and cilantro.

I love their Pho Ribeye! It has thinly sliced, tender ribeye and is so delicious!

Another favorite of mine and by others as well is ther Pho Rib Bones! This comes with two very large rib bones that have been simmered for four hours.

Soup Shop is definitely a place to visit for some fantastic egg rolls and pho! I am a fan :).

The “ber” months are in full swing and the holidays are just around the corner. This means it’s starting to become sweater weather and I’m definitely craving soups more. I’m so happy to say that I may have just found my new go to spot for hot pot soup via Rolling Skies Kitchen. Located in Redondo Beach; is this new takeout only spot specializing in Malatang Hot Pot.

For those unfamiliar with Malatang; it is a popular street food in China and is known as a spicy hot pot. Here at Rolling Skies Kitchen one can customize their Malatang Hot Pot. They’ve got five different bases (classic bone broth, tangy tomato, spicy red chili, creamy Tom yum and land dried). One can choose their spice level (mild, medium or spicy) and up to 3 proteins (choice of lamb, beef, chicken, pork belly, fish fillet, spam, meatballs, fish balls with roe, fish cake, combo meatballs with imitation crab and quail eggs.) There are also options to add more protein or veggies.

Aside from hot pot; Rolling Skies offers fried rice, noodles, snacks, desserts and handcrafted drinks!

For my first visit here I chose to get the Classic Bone Broth Malatang Hot Pot with chicken, beef and quail eggs. I also got a side of popcorn chicken.

I was super impressed with the Classic Bone Broth Malatang. The hot pot was packed with ingredients and flavor. The meats were tender and the veggies were well cooked. It was so savory and tasty. It’s definitely perfect for chilly nights but I would eat this in any type of weather because it so good!

The Popcorn Chicken was also quite tasty! I loved the popcorn chicken. Tasty batter and tender chicken for the win. My only regret was not getting one of their handcrafted bobas to pair with this snack.

I am a fan of Rolling Skies Kitchen and am excited to see them open up in the South Bay! I definitely want to visit this place again and looking forward to trying the other hot pot soups and other offerings.

Hello Dine LA 2022 wrap up!

Dine LA just wrapped up this past week and I had an awesome time trying out several restaurants that participated. For this Dine LA; I chose to support three local eateries in the South Bay. In this blog post; I wanted to highlight some of my favorite plates from their Dine LA offerings.

21 Square Bar and Grill

21 Square Bar and Grill is located at the Torrance Marriott. I had first visited this restaurant for a Yelp Elite Event. I have since visited this place for different occasions and was happy to see they were participating in Dine LA this year.

Their Dine LA lunch menu was $35 and was a three course with appetizer, entree and dessert.

I really enjoyed the Adobo Braised Lamb Shank entree I got from here. The Adobo Braised Lamb shank was on top of creamy mascarpone polenta and topped with crispy shallots and cilantro. The entree was full of flavor. The lamb was tender and juicy. I loved the soft polenta. It simply melted in the mouth. I also loved the crispy shallots and how it added that crunch texture to the dish.

Nomad Eatery

Nomad Eatery is a restaurant in El Segundo, California that offers a mix of Mediterranean, Southeast Asia and Latin American dishes. I had visited this restaurant before when it was Jackson’s Food and Wine but ever since they changed their concept to Nomad; I had yet to check this place out. Dine LA was the perfect time to try.

Their Dine LA lunch menu was $15 and consisted of a starter and an entree.

My favorite from this Dine LA offering was their Nomad Hummus. Their hummus had crunchy garbanzos, lemon, garlic and zhoung. It was accompanied with flatbread. The hummus was perfectly creamy and had a slight spicy zest. I loved spreading it on the flatbread. Light and flavorful; this was a great starter.

Sausal

Sausal is a Mexican restaurant located in downtown El Segundo, California. I had first visited this restaurant years back and also for Dine LA. I definitely was impressed with that visit and thus was excited to check them out for Dine LA again.

Their Dine LA lunch offering was $15 and consisted of a soup, salad, a drink and a taco.

I chose to get the Beef Barbacoa tacos and really enjoyed the tender, flavorful beef. The beef had the perfect mix of dried chilies and spices. The taco was accompanied with flavorful charred tomato salsa. Putting this salsa on the taco. enhanced the flavors even more. The taco paired very well with their refreshing pineapple agua fresca.

I really enjoyed the local eateries I checked out for Dine LA. I love supporting local! The South Bay definitely has some good places and I definitely love being able to try out different cuisines right in my neighborhood! Dine LA or not; I definitely see myself checkout these restaurants for other dishes in the future.

October is Filipino American History Month and this month; I’ve been featuring various Filipino eateries on my Instagram: @hellofoodiejenn. One of my featured eateries is Corridor Flow. Corridor Flow is a Filipino owned coffee cafe in Lomita, California. Not only is it a cafe; they also have a mini plant store at the side. It’s a cute and comforting place to support small businesses all while getting a great cup of coffee.

One of my favorite items to get at Corridor Flow is their Chicken Salad Croissant. The Chicken Salad Croissant has cranberries, walnuts and celery. It is topped with organic arugula and is drizzled with lemon oil. The flavors all mix together to bring a flavorful croissant sandwich and I can definitely say it is one of the best!

My other favorite here consists of a Filipino staple; Arroz caldo. Arroz caldo is a Filipino porridge that is often enjoyed during the cold holiday season. It is a comforting soul and here at Corridor Flow; they have a great version. Their Arroz Caldo has chicken, saffron and ginger garnished with green onions. It is such a heart warming and savory porridge. I also love pairing this with their Ube Latte.

Corridor Flow is a great coffee cafe with Filipino inspired eats. It’s definitely an awesome place and perfect to visit this Filipino American History month!

Oh sweet day! I’m excited to say Sprinkles Cupcakes now has a full fledged shop in the South Bay! Their newest location is at Manhattan Village in Manhattan Beach, California.

It’s not necessarily Sprinkles Cupcakes first stop in the South Bay as they do have a vending atm at the Del Amo Fashion Center. I had blogged about the atm back in September 2021 and now a year later; here they are with a full on shop. It is so exciting!

This new shop has all of the Sprinkles favorites including red velvet and strawberry. Since Halloween is just around the corner; they also had some special offerings. Their Halloween offerings included a Pumpkin cupcake, a Reese’s Pieces and a Bewitched Red Velvet.

I chose to get the Pumpkin and Bewitched and was definitely impressed. I’m a big pumpkin fan and their cupcake had the right hint of pumpkin. I also am a big red velvet fan and so really enjoyed the Bewitched. Can I say I am “bewitched” over this cupcake. It was perfectly charming and cute with its Halloween colored sprinkles (including a scary cute eyeball hehe).

Sprinkles Cupcakes is a nice addition to Manhattan Village. This shop will also be adding an cupcake atm outside and am definitely going to check that out when it opens up (hmm can we say future Hello Kitty Foodie Blog Post ;)). Yay for Sprinkles Cupcakes in the South Bay! So sweet for sure!

Lunasia Dim Sum’s first location was in Alhambra, CA. They quickly became popular because of their great selection of dim sum (点心) and Cantonese entrees. Soon after the opening of their first location; they opened up locations in Pasadena, CA and Cerritos, CA. This past week they opened up their fourth location in California and it happens to be in Torrance, CA! When I heard they opened up in the South Bay; I definitely got excited. I love dim sum and was thrilled to be able to check this place out recently for their soft opening.

Their menu consists of steamed dim sum, baked and fried dim sum and various Cantonese entrees (soup, noodles, fried rice, meat dishes). They also have a good selection of hot tea. For my visit here; I chose to get a mix of dim sum and entrees.

For the dim sum; I got their Steamed Chicken Feet, Bean Curd with Broth, Sticky Rice, Rice Noodle Roll with Beef and Macao Style Egg Tarts. For the entrees; I chose to get a Minced Pork and Century Egg and Congee as well as their Chow Mein with Black Pepper Beef. I absolutely loved every thing we ordered. Everything was full of flavor. They definitely are generous with their portions too!

Bean Curd with Broth – It was first time getting this dim sum dish in a broth. At other dim sum places; I typically don’t see this with broth and so was pleasantly surprised to see the tofu in a broth. The bean curd was packed with veggies and meat. It’s a great light dim sum dish.

Sticky Rice – I love sticky rice at dim sum and here at Lunasia Dim Sum House they have a great version. They pack their sticky rice with lots of with pork, abalone and veggies. This is definitely very fulfilling.

Rice Noodle Roll with Beef – If you are a big fan or rice noodle rolls like me; Lunasia Dim Sum House is the place to go. They have several different rice noodles. Their selection includes Rice Noodle Roll with Beef, Rice Noodle Roll with BBQ Pork, Rice Noodle Roll with Shrimp, Veggie Rice Noodle Roll, Rice Noodle Roll with Chinese Donut and Crispy Shrimp Rice Noodle. I absolutely loved my selection of Rice Noodle Roll with Beef. It was wells seasoned with soy sauce and it there was lots of beef inside.

Macao Style Egg Tarts – For dim sum dessert; egg tarts are my go-to dessert. Here at Lunasia; they have a fantastic creamy egg custard inside a flaky pastry shell. It practically melts in your mouth.

Minced Pork and Century Egg and Congee – Minced Pork and Century Egg and Congee was a great congee for sharing. It was a very heartwarming and comforting broth.

Chow Mein with Black Pepper Beef – The Chow Mein with Beef was definitely one of my favorites during this visit. There was plenty of crispy noodles topped with lots of sauce and beef. I love how the sauce soaks the noodles so some of it is soft, while some of it stays crispy. I also really love the the tender beef they topped it with and the variety of vegetables.

It is so awesome to see Lunasia Dim Sum House in the South Bay! With their tasty dim sum and and entrees; they are sure to be well loved by many dim sum lovers like myself.

Cavitena in Lomita, California has a new look and new location! The South Bay Filipino restaurant is back at the Lomita Village plaza but in a bigger venue. Previously it was a small turo-turo; where one can “point” to the pre-cooked Filipino items. Their new spot is no longer turo-turo but instead is a full dine in restaurant with a bar and karaoke stage.

Many of the old Filipino favorites that were available at the location can still be ordered here. Filipino silog breakfasts which include garlic rice and two eggs were very popular then and what’s nice about the new location is they have added me even more silog dishes! My favorite is the lumpiasilog which comes with twelve of their delicious and crispy lumpia!

Breakfast is served all day but if one is looking for non-breakfast Filipino dishes; they definitely have a good variety offered. From adobo to pancit to kare kare they have it here! More rice; please :).

The new Cavitena is a great and spacious place to enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner and if you’re up for it; you can even go up and sing at their new karaoke stage. It’s truly Filipino good times when there is singing :).

There is a new ramen spot in the South Bay and it is quickly making it’s way to the top of my favorite ramen places! Kotsu Ramen opened up it’s 10th location recently in Redondo Beach, California.

The concept of Kotsu Ramen is “Ramen for Fast Foodies.” They say “Eat. Slurp. Ramen. Repeat!” Being someone who is always on the go I love this concept. They’ve got food that may be fast but is delicious. There is a variety of options that is perfect for any ramen lover out there. At Katsu Ramen; one can your broth and protein. For the ramen broth; one can get the Kotsu (pork broth), Tori (chicken broth) or the Tonyu (plant based). As for proteins; one can get Pork Chashu, Chicken Meatballs or Tofu Steak. Aside from ramen; they have rice bowls and sides like Brussels sprouts, edamame, Takoyaki, chicken karaage and gyoza.

For my first visit here; I had to get one of my all time favorite Japanese side dishes; chicken karaage. Even for the chicken karaage; one has options. One can get it with original flavor, flame or curry. Being it was my first time I had to go traditional and decided to get the original.

I found their karaage to be tasty and unique. They give a bowl of small bite size, crispy pieces. It was bite sized bites but packed with flavor. It was definitely a nice starter for a great meal ahead.

For the ramen; I chose to do something a bit different. I got the Tonyu ramen with pork belly. Yes, I decided to get vegan broth with pork! No judging here as it was definitely a great mix.

I got the Tonyu with a kick and so it definitely had a spicy flare to it that added lots of flavor. The vegan broth was excellent. It was Iusciously creamy and I could barely even tell it was a vegan broth. One of the nice things about getting the Tonyu is it comes with corn, braised greens and Brussels sprouts. (Note they don’t have these veggies in the Kotsu or Tori but instead they have 1/2 an egg.) I am a big fan of brussels sprouts and corn and so this was definitely a nice touch! Overall enjoyed the crunch and texture this added to the ramen and the veggies paired really well with the protein.

Overall I am so happy to see Kotsu Ramen here in the South Bay! There are other locations are mostly in California but they also have a location in Portland, Oregon and they soon will be opening up Camas, Washington. There is a ramen for everyone here and it’s definitely the perfect ramen for fast foodies. Eat. Slurp. Ramen. Repeat.

Hello and Happy Memorial Day Hello Kitty Foodies! Memorial Day; a day that I am thankful to those who gave every thing so that we could have every thing. ❤️🤍💙.

Traditionally Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer and is celebrated with grilled food and bbq. For this Memorial Day however versus traditional bbq; I went with a bit more non-traditional via Korean BBQ. I always love food adventures and supporting local businesses and so this Memorial Day bbq celebration consisted of visiting Palsaik Korean BBQ in Torrance!

Palsaik Korean BBQ was first established in Korea in 2007. The Torrance branch opened up in 2015. Palsaik means “8 colors” in Korean. The name of the restaurant is because this place primarily specializes in pork bellies via 8 different flavors: ginseng, wine, garlic, herb, galbi, curry, miso and hot pepper. Aside from pork; they also have also have beef. The beef combo comes with Prime Brisket and Prime Ribeye or Prime Boneless Shortrib. All combos come with kimchi stew, ramen noodle, mushrooms, garlic, kimchi, bean sprout and lettuce.

Though popular for pork; I decided to try their beef combo with Prime Brisket and Prime Ribeye.

The meal here started off with the server bringing out the Kimchi stew. The Kimchi stew is cooked right at the table and among the ingredients inside are Korean sausage, pork belly and tofu. The combos also come with ramen noodles that you put inside the Kimchi stew.

This Kimchi stew is one very good stew. It has a little bit of a fiery kick to it but it is not overwhelming. It has just the right amount of spice to it. I loved the soft ramen noodles and especially loved the touch of Korean sausage. Both of these ingredients added nice texture and flavor to the soup.

The meats come shortly after the Kimchi stew. The servers at Palsaik are the ones who will do the cooking. They started off first with cooking the bean sprouts, kimchi and the Prime Brisket. The Prime Ribeye is cooked last. I really loved how the servers explained the different foods and ingredients. They were super sweet the whole time and we ended up with some great tasting food.

Both the Prime Brisket and Prime Ribeye were awesome. Their beef here is very tender and flavorful. It practically melted in my mouth. For the beefs; the Prime Ribeye was my favorite. The garlic and onion flavors added great umami flavors and I could tell how well marinated the beef was.

I loved the beef paired with white rice but I also learned how to make Ssambap or Korean lettuce wraps during this visit. The perfect Ssambap consisted of their well flavored season meat with just the right hint of their Ssamjang sauce and the bean sprouts. The Ssamjang sauce added a bit of sweet as well as spicy. It’s a must to add to the beef! The sauce enhances the beef flavors even more.

Everything from the kimchi stew to the two varieties of meat was excellent during this visit. I loved just the abundance of flavors from everything I tried and am so happy that I got to try this Korean BBQ this holiday. I can definitely say this Memorial Day meal at Palsaik was very memorable.

Just this path month an amazing new Japanese restaurant opened up at the Rolling Hills Plaza in Torrance, California. Kozo Sushi Japanese Sushi Kitchen had their grand opening on April 1, 2022. Kozo Sushi originated in Japan in 1964 as takeout sushi place and now 58 years later the popular sushi takeout spot is now in the South Bay!

Similar to their original location; Kozo Sushi Japanese Sushi Kitchen specializes in sushi. One can mix and match to create your own sushi set or you can pick your favorite from their abundant selection. At the Torrance location they have 5 different signature sushi, 6 soy rolls and 24 different signature rolls. They even have one signature roll that was made specifically for the Torrance location. The Torrance Roll can only be found in Torrance and has shrimp tempura, cucumber, salmon, spicy mayo, sweet and hot sauce tempura, salmon spicy mayo and sweet and hot sauce.

My favorite here is the Tempura California Roll. It comes with Kanikama, Avocado, Cucumber and Sesame Sauce. It has the perfect crispy texture and I simply love that crunch at first bite!

Though sushi is their speciality; there are a lot more delightful dishes that can be found at Kozo Sushi Japanese Sushi Kitchen. They’ve got appetizers (edamame, takoyaki, sashimi, gyoza dumplings, tofu nuggets, teriyaki chicken, tempura, egg rolls, karaage), bowls (Teriyaki Chicken Bowl, Beef Sukiyaki Bowl, Mix of Chicken and Beef Bowl), noodles (Shrimp Tempura Udon, Chicken Udon, Beef Sukiyaki Udon), Curry Rice (Katsu Curry, Chicken Karaage Curry) and salads (Green Salad, Seaweed Salad, Teriyaki Chicken Salad, Soft Shell Crab Salad). It is definitely an amazing menu full of yummy Japanese dishes.

Being a karaage and curry lover; I just had to check out their Chicken Karaage Curry. I was definitely pleased with this curry. The curry sauce has just the right spice. It’s not too spicy but definitely has enough of a fiery kick to delight one’s tastebuds. The curry sauce is also thick and perfect over the rice.

There is definitely plenty to choose from at Kozo Sushi Japanese Sushi Kitchen and so one of my favorite things to do is to get a 3 item customized combo. It’s the perfect way to try a variety of things. The 3 item combo comes with your choice of main items including a roll if you’d like. It also comes with white or brown rice and miso soup.

I love being able to mix and match my favorite items. My favorites include karaage chicken, tempura and the California rolls. The Karaage chicken always comes out hot and fresh from their kitchen and is so crispy. Similar to that is the tempura. I love the crunchy texture of the tempura.

58 years after their first location in Japan; Kozo Sushi Japanese Kitchen continues to introduce delicious Japanese food to many. I am definitely happy that they have their newest location in Torrance. I have tried a variety of their food and can say each time I visit I leave happy and full.
